On the 15th of November 2009 we held the first volleyball and netball tournament at our Maher community centre in Leicester. The objective for arranging this mini-tournament was to re-generate a historical sport of the community in volleyball, and to grow and build on the success we had with netball at our annual tournament in Luton earlier this year.
The netball was well attended with 4 teams entering and it was rewarding to see the competitiveness the ladies played with. The final was a crunch game between Leicester and Luton where Leicester took a 2-1 lead but Luton fought back and eventually won the game 4-2.
The volleyball had some old rivalries, old score’s that have been left unsettled and even after this tournament remain unsettled! Again we had 4 teams entering with a lot of people who are passionate about the sport coming along to show their support.
The final was between Leicester and Luton with Luton taking the first set, Leicester fought back to make it a set a piece but Luton stole the show marching their way on to claim the 3rd and deciding set to triumph.
Going forward we hope this tournament has helped to keep these 2 sports and Maher sports in general on the up and keep up with the momentum from the excellent tournament we had in Luton. Watch this space for further information on upcoming events!
