General Information

On the south-east coast, about midway between Veraval and Dwarka in Gujarat, Porbander is the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar is a bustling city, with many different cultures and people.
Dhows are still built here and fish-drying is an important activity here. Porbandar produces gold and silver trinkets, manufactures fine quality silk and cotton.
In ancient times, it was linked with the legend of lord Krishna –and the settlement was called Sudampuri , after one of Krishnas’s friend Sudama. There was once flourishing trade from here to Africa and the Persian Gulf. Porbandar was former capital of the Jethwa Rajput princely state.

Kirti Mandir :- Mohanchand Karamchand Gandhi was born and lived here until he was twelve. It stands in the corner of a large courtyard in the west of town. A swastika on the floor in a small room marks the actual spot. It houses one of India’s many collections of Gandhian memorabilia. There is also an exhibit of photographs, some with English captions, and a small bookshop.
Nehru Planetarium & Bharat Mandir :- The planetarium has afternoon sessions in Gujarati. The large Bharat Mandir is in a garden opposite the planetarium. On the floor inside is a huge relief map of India and the building pillars are painted with bas-reliefs of over 100 religious figures and legendary persons from Hindu epics.
