Maher Traditional Dance

> 30th Raas Garba Competition 2007

> Presented by Gujarat Hindu Association, Leicester

> Sunday 9th September 2007, at Demontfort Hall, Leicester

The Gujarat Hindu Association of Leicester hosted an elegant evening that displayed the amalgamation of action packed dances, music, and traditional Gujarati costumes. This healthy and a very lively competition no doubt created a platform for today¡¦s youth, encouraging them to embrace our very creative heritage through dances that glorify folklore.

The panel of adjudicators included professionals from various different dance and music backgrounds and were on the look out for excellent choreography in Raas, Garba, and choice of music as well as elaborate costumes. Many community groups took part and with competitive minds, spirits and enthusiasm; it was a very tough call for a win.

It was a proud moment to watch young lads from our community rock the stage with swords and shields during their customary performance of “Dhal-Talwar” Raas to a bravery track, glorifying our warrior caste. Under the watchful eye of Nathabhai Odedra, Lakhubhai Godhania, Mandanbhai Odedra and Devshibhai Karavadra, the team of participants included:

Dilip Keshwala, Pratap Modhwadia, Hitesh Godhania, Jayesh Godhania, Ram Modhwadia, Mayur Modhwadia, Nilesh Gorania, Jaymal Godhania, Lakhansi Karavadra, Prakash Modhwadia, Bharat Sindhal, Hamir Odedra

As well as securing 3rd place in Dandia Raas for the second consecutive year, the team of dancers have been an inspiration to many people around the globe. It was not so long ago when a smaller team of dancers went to America, having been invited to take part in a gathering celebrating Gujarat: they stole the show and further performed at a gathering organised by the local American Mahers, raising hundreds of dollars for Samuh Lagna. The team have also performed at various parties, weddings, award ceremonies, and formal gatherings in presence of many dignitaries. They are currently motivating a team of about 50 young dancers who are doing just as well under the guidance of Pratapbhai Odedra. Charging a nominal fee for performances, the team have donated hundreds of pounds to worthy causes.

This is surely a good enough reason for us to be proud of being Maher and further more a reason to celebrate our culture.
