Many thousands have migrated to different parts of the world in search
of better prospects. Even though it hasn't always been a smooth transition
moving away from home, leaving behind family and friends. However
with their ability to cope with hardship, has served them well.
The first wave of migration was in the mid 1900's or 20th
century, when many left the port of Porbandar to set sail to Africa
on cargo ships. The popular destinations were Kenya, Uganda and
Dubai. After the troubles in East Africa, many came to UK in the
sixties and seventies and have settled in all parts of the UK, especially
in Leicester, Birmingham, and London.
Currently there is a strong trend towards the
USA, Canada and Europe because of the high standard of living. Today
Mahers can be found in all parts of the globe.
