Many thousands have migrated to different parts of the world in search of better prospects. Even though it hasn't always been a smooth transition moving away from home, leaving behind family and friends. However with their ability to cope with hardship, has served them well. The first wave of migration was in the mid 1900's or 20th century, when many left the port of Porbandar to set sail to Africa on cargo ships. The popular destinations were Kenya, Uganda and Dubai. After the troubles in East Africa, many came to UK in the sixties and seventies and have settled in all parts of the UK, especially in Leicester, Birmingham, and London. Currently there is a strong trend towards the USA, Canada and Europe because of the high standard of living. Today Mahers can be found in all parts of the globe. |
