Farming is the traditional livelihood back in India, the methods of cultivation have barely changed over the past hundreds of year. However the modern machinery is beginning to make its impact in their way of life.

Maher community has come a long way both in terms of geographical and achievements, they have evolved from battling warrior clan to highly civilized and respected community.

Today Maher community is living in all parts of the world, majority have migrated to America, Canada, and in most countries of Europe (mainly in UK, Netherlands and Germany), South Africa, East Africa, Middle East (UAE and Kuwait), Far East (includes Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan) and as far as Australia and New Zealand.

Farming

Farming still is the main livelihood for majority of Maher's in India. Everyday is based around the farm and it is therefore no surprise that most of them lives on the farms.

The main crops are Groundnuts (mandavi), Maze, wheat, Rice, Cotton, Jowar and Bajara. For more information visit www.gujaratindia.com

A typical day on a farm

6.00am Wake up & drink Tea
6.30am feed live stocks & Milking cow/ buffalo(s)s
7 - 8am breakfast/ morning meal
8- 12am work on farm
12 - 2:00pm Lunch (Bapora) and Afternoon nap
2 - 6pm work on farm ( ploughing, harvesting, irrigating,etc, depending upon time of the season).
6-8 pm Evening meal
8-10pm Socialising - mainly involves Sitting & talking, listen to radio, cd/ tape, watch tv.
